Individual homes at Sand River, as well as the common house, are green-built and sited for solar, resulting in lower-than-average energy usage.  Some residents have installed grid-tied, photovoltaic (PV) systems on their roofs to further reduce the consumption of coal-powered electricity.

Additionally, work was completed in 2012 on a PV system on the roof of the common house. See PV2EV for more on this project.
